It’s just about time to get into spring cleaning! To help make your cleaning session more successful this year, here are a few tips to help you out.
Create a Home Cleaning Checklist
Ready to start the spring cleaning process? It can be a daunting task, but not only does it help keep your home clean and clutter-free, but it is also beneficial for your health, and the physical action of cleaning your home can boost your mood after a long, cold winter.
This is a big project, and any big project benefits from a checklist. Everyone’s home cleaning checklist looks a little different, but you can count on finding common rooms and areas on everyone’s to-do list. These can include:
- Kitchen
- Living room
- Bedroom(s)
- Bathroom(s)
- Garage
Once you’ve identified the areas, it’s time to create the checklist. Write out each task you want to accomplish in each room. Breaking down the tasks this way can help you focus on one area at a time rather than trying to decide where to start with an intimidating list of all the tasks.
Put Away Out-of-Season Items
Spring is here and starting to push winter away, which means it’s time to store your out-of-season items. Whether your chunky winter sweaters are now taking up too much room in your closet or you still have décor from past holidays hanging around, now is the time to put that stuff away. Renting a storage unit to store all your items is a great way to help you save space in your home. Not only will you be able to easily access your items whenever you need them again, but your garage or closet won’t be stuffed full of winter items.
Clean in Order
Always clean a room or space from the top down. When you do, the dust and debris from ceiling fans and walls settle to the ground before you clean the floors (which should be the last step of your cleaning routine). If you work from the bottom up, you’ll likely have to redo a spot or two. Work smarter, not harder, and make less work for yourself by starting up high and working your way down.
Tackle the Essentials
Spring cleaning is usually a pretty big deep cleaning, one that goes beyond regular weekly cleaning sessions. But what does that mean, and what do you clean? Here are some essentials you don’t want to miss out on.
- Wipe walls and baseboards: Walls get dirty, and baseboards get scuffed and dusty. Spring cleaning is the perfect time to take a damp sponge and give your walls and baseboards a wipe-down. Even better, if you have a mop, you can also use that to easily clean your walls and baseboards.
- Clean upholstered furniture and rugs: It’s not the most fun job, but it’s usually one that’s done when long overdue. And the spring season is the time to tackle it. Go ahead and rent an industrial-strength carpet cleaner if you don’t have one at home. Before you use it, make sure to do a spot test first so you can be sure it won’t leave a mark on your carpet or furniture. If you don’t have the time or energy, consider calling a professional company to take care of this task for you.
- Clean doorknobs, hinges, and handles: Doorknobs and handles will need a good wipe down and disinfecting after a long winter. And hinges can get dusty over time. Wipe everything with paper towels to remove dust, and then go in on handles and knobs with a disinfectant wipe after.
- Dust light fixtures and ceiling fans: Light fixtures and ceiling fans often don’t get a lot of love during weekly cleaning, so don’t forget to include them in your spring cleaning. Remove cobwebs and dust with your duster.
- Wash windows: Your windows need cleaning too after the long winter. Use a squeegee or microfiber cloth with a mixture of water and vinegar to clean windows.
- Clean sliding door tracks: If you have sliding doors, you may notice the tracks can get dusty and grimy. Use an all-purpose cleaner and paper towels to wipe them clean.
- Perform gutter maintenance: After winter, chances are you have some debris in your gutters. Get out the ladder (or hire someone) to clean all that gunk out so water can have a clear path off your roof.
Keep Cleaning Supplies on Each Level of Your Home
This tip really helps to make spring cleaning go a lot easier. If you have a tiny house, this may not seem necessary. But even if you have 100 square feet to clean or your small house has multiple levels, it can really help.
On each level, keep cleaning supplies in each bathroom, the kitchen, and the laundry room. This will allow you to quickly and easily access everything you need for cleaning when you need it. Plus, you won’t be running from room to room when you need a microfiber cloth or all-purpose cleaner.
Don’t Forget Odd Jobs
Don’t forget to do the odd jobs during your spring cleaning! It’s not always fun, but it’s nice to be able to get these tasks out of the way now. Besides the essential tasks we listed above, don’t forget these other home cleaning tasks:
- Cleaning the oven
- Cleaning air vents
- Changing the air filter
- Washing outdoor furniture
- Unclogging drains
- Tossing expired items from your refrigerator and pantry
